Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialist, evidence-based therapy that supports the lymphatic system to remove excess fluid, reduce swelling, and aid healing. It is not the same as general "lymphatic drainage massage" offered in spa or beauty settings.
MLD uses light, painless, rhythmic techniques applied directly to the skin — no oils or creams are used. The technique is recognised by surgeons, GPs, and other health professionals as a clinical treatment, particularly for lymphoedema, post-surgical recovery, and related conditions.
When combined with compression therapy, skin care, and decongestive exercise, MLD forms what is known as Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) — the recommended treatment for lymphoedema.
